Live from Worktown joined by Grace Williams, a journalist at the Bolton News, read her news article here!

Although we had a blustery and drizzly start, Thursday 2nd July kicked off our programme of My Place Walks for the summer. The first stop was a visit to Hall i’ th’ Wood, which had kindly been opened by Matthew Watson of Bolton Library and Museum Services.

Both Peter Firth and Matthew talked about the hall and its important former resident, Samual Crompton. From there, Peter led the Group to Water Millock, where he explained the history of the hall, now a Toby Carvery.

A route along Crompton Way to Firwood Fold, while not as scenic as other parts of the walks, was nevertheless full of history and interesting stories.

Samuel Crompton again featured as we visited his birthplace, before enjoying a riverside walk that brought the group out to Tonge Moor Road.

A gentle walk along Oaks Lane and into woodland brought us to the ruins of The Oaks, the home of local mill owners, the Ashworths, before arriving back at the start.

Thanks so much to everyone who came along and made this such a memorable day!
